Making Changes

Folks, just as I did when I got serious about weight loss, I have decided to once again give up sodas again — diet or otherwise.

Why?

I discovered a nifty app the other day called Fooducate and let me tell you, it opened my eyes to a lot of stuff.

Without getting into too much detail about Fooducate, what it basically does is give you ratings of A through D on foods in its database. Curiously, I entered “diet pepsi” – my one vice – and read the results and score.

fooducateIt came back with a score of C- and the reasons why it was given such a grade. What it basically came down to was that it, along with just about all other sodas, are packed with chemicals that have been known to cause cancer and that, along with reading a few articles on Active about sodas, was enough for me to decide that our next trip to the grocery store would not include any sodas.

As of this post, I’ve been soda-free for nearly two weeks and have had absolutely no craving to drink one. On the one occasion when I did have a small sip of regular Coke (to prevent Ann’s cup from overflowing with bubbles at a restaurant), not only was I underwhelmed but also disgusted. It was in no way pleasing to me anymore and I was happy to have made the decision to quit. Sodas of any kind are pretty much useless in that they have no benefit. Heck, even a Big Mac is a source of protein albeit not a healthy source.

In fact, Fooducate sort of opened my eyes to how badly processed a lot of foods are and why it’s important to know about what you’re putting into your body. Since I no longer drink sodas, I’ve switched to filtered water and while at work, green tea. The difference is that now I add only honey to my green tea and to be on the safe side, no longer throw in a packet of artificial sweetener which contains saccharin.

Sadly, Fooducate also gave my beloved Sun Dried Tomato & Basil Wheat Thins the not-too-impressive score of B- citing that it contains BHT, a chemical that is considered a carcinogen. That was enough for me to make my last box indeed my last box. On the other hand, my Silk Soymilk Light was rated at A- so that’s definitely still worth buying.

Will the next step be vegetarianism? Veganism? I can guarantee you that it won’t but in giving up sodas and continuing to read up and study some of my favorite foods, I know for sure that plenty more changes are on the way.

And that’s a good thing in my book.

The Suite Life

© 2012 Los Angeles DodgersAs my readers know, I started this blog when I was about 250 lbs. to chronicle my progress on my way to my goal of 200 lbs. By then, I had already lost 50 lbs. but wasn’t blogging yet. I did this not only for my own motivation but also as a way to inspire others to do the same thing.

And I have to admit that making such a commitment put a bit of pressure on me. I set my goal and so as not to look the fool, had to ensure myself that I would make it. Of course you know the results of my hard work and hopefully my readers have achieved their own success.

What you may not know is that I’m also a Dodger fan and up until the All-Star break, was so happy to see them doing so well. As of today, well, things are sort of not going their way but that’s fine. There’s lots of baseball left.

While watching a game a few weeks ago, I saw a promo for their Dodger Digital Series which is touted as a “one-of-a-kind social media experience built to create a Dodger experience tailored to fans’ hobbies, interests, and / or passions.” I decided to give it a better look by visiting the website and that’s when I saw there was a category for Fitness Influencers.

So I thought I’d take a shot in the dark and see what it got me. I filled out the form, submitted it, and pretty much forgot about it.

That is until I got an email today from the Dodgers.

In the email, it stated that I was chosen to be part of a select group of 20 other fitness influencers to attend the Dodgers’ July 31st game which is also Kirk Gibson Bobblehead Night. As if that wasn’t enough, we get to watch the game from the Dodger Digital Suite, get free VIP parking, and watch the Dodgers take batting practice – a rarity indeed since they do it well before game time.

So not only has my weight loss scored me some free samples and an iPod nano (which I have since sold), I now get to see my Dodgers from a suite at baseball’s most beautiful stadium and watch them take batting practice on the field.

The suite life indeed!

Naturally, I will take lots of photos and post them when I get home or, as is the case these days, post them as they happen. Welcome to 200by40, a blog dedicated to my thoughts, trials and tribulations during my quest to reach my goal of weighing 200 pounds–or losing 50+ pounds–by my 40th birthday on February 14, 2009 by doing it the old-fashioned way: proper diet and exercise. I will be adding more content as well as an “About” page later tonight.
